I don’t know if I missed it but didn’t see this posted anywhere else. I was updating a N81’s firmware yesterday and found out that the Nokia Software Updater has been updated to version 1.4.53 from the earlier 1.4.49.
I don’t know about the changes made in this update, but for those who want the latest software on their computers, time to go updating!
Symbian Freak reported a few days back about availability of Windows Live client for Nokia in USA and a few more European countries. I’m happy to say that it is also available for download in India, just go to download! in the Menu and you’ll find the client listed as Mail, IM.
The Share online configuration for Windows Live Spaces is still missing but at least now the mail and IM client is available officially in India. Go ahead, download it!
AAS reports that Google has released a native search client for S60 devices. The client is not available in all the countries yet, so it might not show on your browser unless until you go to mobile.google.com on your phone’s browser. A big issue is that it uses the now almost extinct pencil key to launch directly and doesn’t follow the plugin approach like Ovi and Nokia’s own search. But here’s to a start.
Head over for screenshots and more!
AAS had reported a few days back that Nokia Maps has hit beta 2.0. The new application came with a new Map loader version 1.3.5. You can download Nokia Maps beta 2.0 and the Map Loader here. I had expected some sort of data update for India with the new map loader but it didn’t happen immediately. Today I just found the the map data for India has been upped from the earlier 21 MB to 24.1 MB.
I don’t have the details of the data that has been updated and I sincerely hope that we do get a big update sometime soon since Nokia has already launched the Navigator in India.
I few days back I had talked about my pursuit of better maps for India on my N95 in the post Mapping India.
Although I was more or less satisfied with MG Maps running Yahoo India Maps, there was one drawback in application which was preventing it to be a perfect mapping and navigation solution for the Indian user. As I had mentioned in the earlier post, the driving directions feature is still not available in India since MG Maps uses Google for all its searches by default including routes (Google does not have driving directions/ route search for India yet). So even if you get detailed maps using Yahoo India maps, with your current location, speed heading etc on the screen, you still cannot use MG Maps as a GPS navigation system.
I posted a request to the developer of MG Maps to include Yahoo India maps in the search feature of the application and found that there is thread on the subject the forums section of MG Maps. At the forum I also discovered that there a very talented person who goes by the alias spadival has managed to create a pipe on Yahoo using Yahoo India Maps to get driving directions for India. Click here to read more about pipes. You can find the pipe created by spadival here.
Now what this pipe does is, it uses Yahoo Maps India to search for directions which are fed into the “from” and “to” fields and gives an output on the map. The best part is that the output can also be saved as a kml file which can be loaded to the phone running MG Maps and then the application loads the file and the way-points are show on the phone.
Here is a detailed “how to” on plotting your route in advance, sending it to the phone and then taking it up from there:
