Hack: Download Any File Via The Default S60 Browser

0111.png

My biggest gripe with the default S60 browser has been the (dis)ability to download files what the phone does not recognise itself. So inspite of WiFi and 3G speeds we cannot download a lot of stuff. A lot of times I get emails with .rar archived attachments and inspite of having a kickass smartphone while even lets me edit documents I cannot even get that attachment to my mobile. Silly!

But fear no more, Biggzy has just written an amazing guide (which he briefly mentions in the comments of the previous download manager post) which allows us to download any file with any extension via the default browser. I am reproducing it here. Brilliant work pal. There is just one caveat though you need to have the latest Core Player installed for this to work, if you do not have it I’d recommend getting it.

I recall when I had the N81, at first the phone couldn’t even download .zip attachments, however after I installed the default Zip application the Browser started downloading zip archives, so it is not difficult to implement or anything, S60 Browser team you listening?

The complete guide with step by step screenshots is right here after the break. If you prefer a video tutorial, look this page up.

Before we get started you need a file explorer (x-plore works great) and the latest CorePlayer v1.2.0.

1. Open coreplayer and goto tools in the options then open preferences.

002.png

2. On the prefenences page select the LEFT softkey called SELECT PAGE then scroll down and select FILE ASSOCIATINS.

003.png

3. In file assotiations tick the AIF box, then select ok and exit coreplayer.

004.png

4. Now open your selected file browser (i use x-plore) and goto this path C:\Data\ and locate the file called coreplayer.ext .

005.png

5. Now select optins and edit the coreplayer.ext file, at the top you will see <handler ext=”aif” mime=”.

006.png

6. Now we need to edit the ext=”aif” and change it to ext=”rar” then save and exit the file browser.

007.png

7. Open the default browser and locate a .rar file to download.

008.png

8. Next click on the .rar file to begin download, the download details will open and you will see the download details. On the download details popup it says Hide on the right hand side, you need to select this before the download has finished.

9. Once the file has downloaded a popup opens asking to Open the file or save it for Later, select later.

010.png 0111.png

10. Now in the browser options select Downloads, the downloaded files will then show with the .rar file showing as complete.

11. Select options and then you have 3 choices, select save and then select your save location.

12. The file will save to the path you choose, then to open it you need to launch an app that supports that file (x-plore opens .rar files).

NOTE: The .rar extension was used as a quide, this will work with ANY file, you just need to follow this quide and use another extesion instead of .rar.

If you do not select the Hide option as shown at point 8 the file will still download but upon download coreplayer will open and try to read the file and fail (just exit coreplayer). If this happens you need to download again as shown above or use your file browser and goto C:\System\dmgr and look in the folders to find the file to move it or open it.

Update: Fix For Downloading Small Files

screenshot0019zj61.png

If you do the coreplayer trick and find it hard to download small files do this, after editing the coreplayer.ext file download y-tasks from Drjukka.com, you need the y-task main app and the file types plugin and the mainserver part (needs signing though), install all 3 parts then open y-tasks in the menu then file types, next scroll down and find application/vnc.coreplayer, set it to open with zip manager, exit Y-tasks, now when you download a .rar file you do not have to select hide like before. Upon download zip manager opens and a pop up asks you if you want to open or copy, select copy and save the rar file, if you select open zip manager gives an error and closes, once copied open the rar file from x-plore, easy as 1, 2, 3 hope this helps!

Once again top work Biggzy, we’ll finally forget the file not supported error!

  1. yes seeing the “not supported” error got me so angry and i had to use opera mobile to download .rar files, so i set out to solve the issue, however untill core player came out (the latest version) with mime types included i could not do anything as i canot programe, the day i got the new core player i set out to find away to solve the problem.

  2. Even I was forced to use Opera for this but I guess things will take a change for the better! But such a thing should come supported out of the box. Nokia/S60 please take note.

    Bery, it sure is!

  3. I have the latest version of coreplayer and i able to change the file associations on the options but can’t seem to find the coreplayer.ext file anywhere, any ideas as to where it could be?

  4. not sure why your getting these probs, did you follow the guide 100%, the coreplayer.ext mite be on the E Drive instead of C, but it should be in the data folder, be sure to use a 3rd party file explorer as the default file manager will not find the file as its hidden.

  5. 100%, the file’s not there, also not hidden. I have also used the search function…

Would really like to post it as would be great news, but should work for everyone then. 😉

  6. Works, even without your file! My x-plore seemed to have a bug and showed hidden files only after restarting.

    I’ll try the rest now.

  7. hi all me again, if you do the coreplayer trick and find it hard to download small files do this, after editing the coreplayer.ext file download y-tasks from drjukka.com, you need the y-task main app and the file types plugin and the mainserver part (needs signing tho), install all 3 parts then open y-tasks in the menu then file types, next scroll down and find application/vnc.coreplayer, set it to open with zip manager, exit y-tasks, now when you download a .rar file you dnt have to select hide like befor, and upon download zip manager opens and a pop up asks you if you want to open or copy, select copy and save the rar file, if you select open zip manager gives an error and closes, once copied open the rar file from x-plore, easy as 1, 2, 3 hope this helps guys

  8. Thanks, unfortunately I can’t use opera coz the IAP on my network won’t allow me to view websites other than the network’s home page. Only the default browser can access the web by turing on the connection security on the access point settings.

  9. Well… I gotta tell you people it took me all sunday long to finally do this trick!!! First of all downloading the two programs needed was such a big problem (that’s why it took me a long time), after that locating the file using x-plore… but in this moment I’m downloading a full very-difficult-to-find rar album using my N95 mobile!!!

Thanks a lot for helping us!! You’re such a wonderful hacker!

    See you soon people!!
